Summertime has arrived. The steady heat and humidity make it clear that the season is here to stay, though some people may prefer milder weather. Still, it’s an ideal time to enjoy sunshine, cool evening breezes, and fresh seasonal foods.

Ramadan begins in just a few days, bringing joy and reflection for Muslims worldwide. While the spiritual aspects are most important, sharing a nutritious, well-prepared meal with family and friends is a treasured part of each evening.
Whenever possible I love to dine al fresco. Eating outdoors after breaking the fast, followed by prayer and the main meal, can be a wonderful way to connect—if you have a deck or patio that can be lit and kept bug-free (a fan nearby helps), the experience is even more pleasant.
Here are practical tips to help you set the scene for outdoor Iftar gatherings.

1. Find the right spot. You don’t need a large deck to enjoy dining outside. Even small, scenic corners of a yard or patio can offer relaxing views and a cozy atmosphere. Dim ambient lighting can make the space feel intimate and special.

2. Use good lighting. Lighting transforms an outdoor dining area. String lights overhead or around the dining spot create warmth and charm, and they make it easy to see the food. Lanterns and table lights add focal points and enhance the mood.
These overhead string lights hang from tree to tree.
This lantern was a vintage find that was repainted for dramatic effect and works beautifully for Ramadan nights.

Add a few small lights on the table to brighten faces and dishes. Simple, inexpensive string or tea lights work well.

3. Keep decor simple. Outdoor dining should feel relaxed and effortless. Choose a few favorite items—beautiful serving pieces, a simple centerpiece, or cloth napkins—and resist the urge to overdecorate. A restrained approach often feels more elegant and inviting.

4. Use non-breakable tableware when possible. Accidents happen more easily outdoors. Plastic or melamine plates and reusable glasses are practical choices that reduce the risk of breakage and make cleanup safer and quicker—especially on hard surfaces like concrete or stone.

Colorful, reusable glasses add cheer without worry.
Fresh fruit like lemons can serve as casual decor that won’t create a problem if knocked over, while adding a bright pop of color.

5. Step back and assess. Once everything is in place, step back and view the setup from a distance. This helps you see how guests will first perceive the table and allows you to remove or adjust items to keep the scene balanced and welcoming.

As dusk settles, the lights and surroundings take on a softer glow, and the atmosphere becomes even more inviting.

The evening light really enhances the mood.

Will you be hosting any outdoor dinners or Iftar gatherings this summer? A simple, thoughtfully arranged setting can turn a meal into a memorable evening with family and friends.
