Virgin Bloody Mary with V8: Zesty Non-Alcoholic Cocktail Recipe

This virgin Bloody Mary made with V8 is one of my favorite non-alcoholic drinks. It’s a tasty way to boost your vegetable intake while enjoying a full-flavored, savory mocktail.

A perfect Bloody Mary elevates any brunch, and this V8-based version is simple, popular, and delicious. A salted or chili-rimmed glass adds a nice finishing touch.

Virgin Bloody Mary Recipe v8 in a cup

This recipe is inspired by the classic Bloody Mary cocktail, often called a “meal in a glass.” Combining tomato flavor, V8 juice, and bold garnishes creates a satisfying drink that works as a refreshing brunch beverage or a hearty mocktail.

I also have a recipe for a Non-Alcoholic Bloody Mary mocktail that uses organic tomato puree, but swapping in V8 provides a different base and an easy shortcut. It’s nice to have both options depending on what you’re craving.

Garnishes are essential for a standout Bloody Mary. They add flavor, texture, and visual appeal—think celery stalks, olives, crispy bacon, cucumber slices, or pickles. If you enjoy colorful mocktails, try my Blue Lagoon mocktail for inspiration on presentation and garnish ideas.

One of the best things about this recipe is how quick it is: active prep takes only about five minutes. It’s an ideal choice when you want a great-tasting mocktail without spending a lot of time mixing ingredients. For another fast mocktail option, my Virgin Margarita on the Rocks takes the same amount of time to put together.

Although a traditional Bloody Mary usually contains vodka, this non-alcoholic version gets its body and flavor from extra V8 juice instead of non-alcoholic vodka. The V8 brings depth and extra vegetable goodness, making the drink satisfying on its own.

There are commercial Bloody Mary mixes available, but they don’t always include the fresh, nuanced seasonings that make a homemade version special. I prefer building the flavor myself with simple pantry ingredients to get the right balance of spice, salt, and umami.

V8 juice

V8 juice serves as the flavorful base for this alcohol-free Bloody Mary. It adds vegetable flavor and body so you can enjoy a nutrient-rich drink packed with tomato and other veggie juices.

Gluten-free soy sauce

If you aren’t avoiding gluten, regular soy sauce works fine. For those who are gluten-sensitive or have celiac disease, choose a soy sauce labeled “gluten-free” and confirm the ingredients list to avoid hidden gluten.

Gluten-free Worcestershire sauce

Most Worcestershire sauces are gluten-free, but check the label to be sure. Vegan Worcestershire alternatives exist, and while soy sauce can substitute in a pinch, Worcestershire gives a distinctive savory depth that’s worth seeking out.

How to make it

  • Start by blending fresh tomatoes (or use canned tomato juice), roughly chopped cucumber, shallot, and chili.
  • Puree until smooth, about 1–2 minutes.
  • Pour V8 juice into a large pitcher, then add a dash of hot sauce, horseradish, gluten-free soy sauce, and Worcestershire. Stir well.
  • Add thyme, onion powder, and black pepper to the tomato puree and mix again.
  • On a plate, combine ½ teaspoon salt and ⅛ teaspoon chili powder or Tajín for the rim.
  • Refrigerate the tomato mixture for 1–2 hours, or until cold.
  • Rub fresh lemon juice around the glass rims, then dip into the chili-salt mixture.
  • Add ice to each glass and pour the chilled tomato-V8 mixture over the ice.
  • Garnish with celery, bacon, green olives, cucumber slices, and a pickle, or choose your favorites.

Top tip: Increase the chili powder or hot sauce for a spicier drink.

You can store leftovers in the refrigerator for 3–5 days. The flavors often meld and improve with a day or two of resting—many people enjoy this drink even more after it sits.
