The backstory.
Italian pasta salad is a summer classic that appears at backyard cookouts, potlucks, and casual dinners. I wanted a version that kept those familiar flavors but felt a little fresher and lighter. This recipe combines juicy tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, briny olives, pepperoni, and a zesty Italian dressing for a bold, satisfying salad that still tastes bright and wholesome.

It’s a must-make.
This zesty Italian pasta salad strikes the ideal balance between classic and fresh — an easy crowd-pleaser that’s surprisingly bright.
- Classic Italian flavors: Pepperoni, olives, mozzarella, and basil deliver the bold taste you expect.
- Flexible and lighter options: Use bowtie pasta or swap in cauliflower for a lower-carb alternative that still tastes great.
- Perfect for gatherings: This chilled salad holds up well in the fridge, making it ideal for parties, cookouts, and potlucks.
- Simple ingredients, big flavor: A few everyday items combine to make a flavorful, satisfying dish.
Simple recipes often become favorites — this pasta salad is definitely one of those.
Let’s talk texture and flavor.
Each bite balances bright, savory, and fresh notes. Tender pasta soaks up the zesty dressing while cherry tomatoes provide bursts of sweetness. Mozzarella adds creaminess that softens the salty olives and pepperoni, and fresh basil finishes the salad with a clean herbal lift. The result is familiar comfort with bold Italian flavor.
What you’ll need.

Just a handful of ingredients come together quickly to create this flavorful pasta salad.
- Bow tie pasta: Classic shape for pasta salad texture (or use another short pasta).
- Cherry tomatoes: Halved for juicy bursts of flavor.
- Mozzarella cubes: Creamy, mild cheese to balance salty elements.
- Black olives: Pitted and briny for that Italian touch.
- Pepperoni minis: Deli-style savory bites that add depth.
- Green bell pepper: Diced for crunch and freshness.
- Zesty Italian dressing: The flavor base — use your favorite or a homemade zesty Italian.
- Fresh basil: Chopped for a bright herbal finish.
- Salt and pepper: To taste.
If you like this salad, consider trying other cold pasta or vegetable salads for variety — from tangy dill pickle or tortellini salads to light seafood versions. Each is easy to make and great for gatherings.
Customize it your way.
This salad is easy to adapt based on what you have or prefer.
- Swap bowtie for rotini, penne, or shells for a different bite.
- Add sliced red onion for color and a bit of bite.
- Toss in artichoke hearts for a Mediterranean twist.
- Include diced cucumber for extra crunch.
- Stir in a spoonful of mayo or Greek yogurt to make a creamy variation.
Flexible dietary swaps.
It’s simple to adjust this recipe for many diets.
- Gluten-free: Use gluten-free pasta.
- Lower carb: Replace pasta with cauliflower florets.
- Vegetarian: Omit pepperoni or replace with marinated artichokes or roasted chickpeas.
- Dairy-free: Use a dairy-free cheese or omit the mozzarella.
How to make Italian dressing pasta salad.
Assembly is quick once ingredients are prepped.
- Cook the pasta according to package directions. Drain and rinse with cold water to cool it completely.
- In a large bowl, combine pasta (or cooled cauliflower) with tomatoes, mozzarella, olives, pepperoni, and diced bell pepper.
- Toss with zesty Italian dressing and chopped basil. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours to let flavors meld.

How to serve it.
Zesty Italian pasta salad pairs well with a wide range of meals and occasions.
- Serve with grilled chicken, steak, pork, or baked fish for a simple dinner.
- Offer alongside burgers or sandwiches at a cookout.
- Add to a buffet of Italian-inspired salads for parties.
- Pack it for picnics or meal-prep lunches.
- Finish with extra chopped basil or freshly cracked black pepper before serving.
Kori’s tips.
- Chill before serving. The salad tastes best after at least two hours in the fridge so the flavors can meld.
- Add more dressing if needed. Pasta (or cauliflower) can absorb dressing while chilling; add a bit more before serving to refresh it.
- Fresh basil makes a difference. It brightens the whole salad and lifts the flavors.
FAQs
Keep the salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Toss before serving and add a little extra dressing if it has absorbed too much.
Yes. This salad often tastes better after chilling for a few hours because the flavors have time to blend.
A bright, tangy Italian dressing is ideal. Homemade zesty Italian gives the most flavor, but a good store-bought version works, too.
