Tender asparagus spears are coated in a seasoned breadcrumb crust and fried until golden and crisp in this simple fried asparagus recipe.

Why this recipe works
Frying asparagus gives you a delightful contrast of textures: a crunchy exterior from the breadcrumb coating and a tender, flavorful spear inside. This straightforward method—dredging first in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs—creates a sturdy crust that crisps quickly in hot oil.
These asparagus “fries” work the same way as other vegetable fries, like green bean fries: dip, coat, and fry. Serve them warm with a creamy dip such as ranch or garlic aioli for a crowd-pleasing appetizer or a tasty side dish.

Ingredient information and substitution suggestions
Asparagus – Choose firm, medium to thick spears that will hold up to frying. Very thin spears can become limp.
Oil – Use a neutral, high smoke point oil such as vegetable, canola, or peanut oil for frying.
How to make fried asparagus
Step-by-step photos are provided above to help visualize the process. You can jump to the recipe card at the bottom for the printable version with measurements and timings.
- Trim the woody ends from the asparagus spears.

- In a medium bowl, stir together the breadcrumbs, salt, lemon pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.

- In a small bowl, whisk the egg with the water until combined.
- Arrange three shallow dishes for dredging: flour, the egg mixture, and the breadcrumb mixture.

- Coat each spear by dredging in flour, dipping in the egg, then rolling in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently so the crumbs adhere. Repeat until all spears are coated.

- Pour enough oil into a large, heavy-bottomed skillet to reach about 1/2 inch up the sides and heat it to roughly 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the asparagus about 2 minutes per side, or until golden brown, turning once. Drain on paper towels and serve immediately.

Frequently asked questions & expert tips
Fried asparagus is best enjoyed right away. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheating in an air fryer can help crisp them a bit, but they may not be as crunchy as when freshly fried.
Yes. Make sure the breaded asparagus is at room temperature before cooking. Preheat the air fryer to 380°F for a few minutes, then cook the breaded spears at 380°F for about 4–5 minutes, checking for crispness and color.

Serving suggestions
Serve fried asparagus warm with ranch, aioli, or your favorite dip. A squeeze of lemon or a sprinkle of grated Parmesan adds brightness, but they’re delicious plain as well. These are ideal as an appetizer or as a crispy side alongside main dishes—drain briefly on paper towels and enjoy while hot.
